How Long Distance Courtship Started

Courtship is wooing her love to win her hand.

The term originated in the courts of the kings of European countries. They were only local affairs.

Long distance courtship started when many young Europeans were posted overseas in their colonies.

The men had to lead a lonely life.

If they were in love, they could see each other only once in every two or three years, when they went home in furlough.

They used to keep in touch with each other through letters sent through couriers or messages, until they got married after which wife could go along to the place of posting.

A somewhat similar situation prevails now.

With man and women working at different places there is little scope for them being together at the same place.

When one of them gets assignment in a foreign country, the courtship can be carried out only through telephone, email, sms, chat etc.

Most of this relationships end in a happy marriage.

Internet is the ‘in thing’ for the start of a long distance courtship replacing the old fan mail.

Most get carried away by sweet talk, hoping to get married and live happily for ever, which does not take place in so many cases.

Long distance courtship is not always pleasant or durable especially if one of them gets attracted to someone else in the new place.

The relationship is bound to sour.

A practical solution is marriage prior to the separation during courtship.

Though it may seem conservative it is for a good healthy family setup.
